From Flame crested geckos for sale to Harlequin crested geckos for sale and everything in between, Crested Gecko Color Morphs are a thing of beauty.  Below we will explain some of the main colors/morphs of the crested gecko species.

Crested Geckos have a very wide range of color, pattern, and traits with a seemingly endless possibility of combinations.  Believe it or not that opens the doorway for serious breeders to an excitingly beautiful world of Morphs. Crested geckos are relatively new when it comes to the animal world, only being rediscovered no more than 20 years ago after being thought extinct. This has not allowed scientists the time needed to prove out any traits so when it comes to crested geckos, traits are not genetically connected to the morphs.

Interestingly, once they are it is possible many things will change but until then we try to maintain a logical approach and come to a universal standard that can be accepted by a majority of the gecko community. Dedicated breeders have a very good idea what they can produce and which traits seem to breed true.

How to breed crested geckos

Pairs of breeding age crested geckos for sale can be housed together year round. A male crested gecko doesn’t need to be separated from his mate unless he is causing her stress by not leaving her alone. Female cresties retain sperm for a couple of months, so it is not important to keep breeding pairs together all season if separation is needed because of fighting, but again, keeping them together is more common then not.

Making a lay box for your crested gecko

During a breeding season, female crested geckos can produce a clutch of two eggs just about every 30 – 45 days. When a gravid female is ready to lay her eggs, she will seek out a damp space in order to dig and lay.

A nesting or laying box inside the habitat or enclosure which makes it much easier to keep track of the eggs and also to remove the eggs and transfer to the incubator when needed. It can be a plastic container approximately 8 inches long by 5 inches wide by 5 inches tall, filled to a depth of 4 inches with moistened sphagnum moss.

If you notice the female digging holes in the moistened substrate during the evening, check the following morning to see if the substrate appears packed down, and if the holes are covered-both are good signs that the female crested gecko has deposited her eggs.

Use the right crested gecko lay box substrate

To create a simple incubation box, fill a plastic shoebox two-thirds full with your desired incubation medium, which should be moist enough to hold water, but not wet enough to drip when you scoop up a handful. Popular types of substrate or hatching medium include Hatchrite, vermiculite, perlite and Superhatch. You can find most of these at your local gardening store or online. We use individual deli style cups with 1-2 holes per lid.

When you are ready to harvest your eggs, simply but carefully remove your crested gecko eggs from the egg-laying bin.  Be sure not to rotate the eggs from their original positions in which they were laid.  This is important as the embryo attaches to the side wall of the egg and should not be rotated once it has sat for 24 hours.

How to care for the new crested gecko eggs

Once removed, sink the eggs about a quarter-inch down into the incubation medium. Put the shoebox lid in place and place the incubation box in a cool, dark place, such as on a shelf in a closet.  If you are using something like an actual incubator, we prefer incubating our eggs are 77 degrees.

A temperature-regulating incubator is not necessary to hatch crested gecko eggs but can be helpful.  At CB Reptile, we incubate crested gecko eggs at room temperature, which fluctuates between 72 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit at the height of the breeding season. Also, using a room temperature range will result in hatchlings emerging after 60 to 70 days during the warmer months on average.  On colder months, when temps are 66-70, it can take up to 120 days as the days grow cooler.

Before long, you will see baby crested gecko hatchlings pipping out of their eggs!

Crested Geckos (Correlophus (Rhacodactylus) ciliatus)

Crested geckos are originally from New Caledonia (a group of islands between Fiji and Australia). Because of their ease of care, Crested geckos are ideal reptile pets for beginners.  As a result, crested gecko breeders have come up with simple, easy-to-meet requirements for keeping pet crested geckos. Because crested geckos are primarily tree dwellers, they make outstanding displays in naturalistic vivariums.

What is the Life Span of a crested gecko?

Under proper care, plan for your crested gecko to live 15 to 20 years.

What is the Crested Geckos Size? How big does a Crested Gecko get?

Both male and female crested geckos grow to a moderate size of 4 to 5 inches excluding tail length), and 8-9 inches in total length including their tails. Crested geckos are mature sexually when they are about 15 to 18 months of age, and at a weight of approximately 30-35 grams.

Crested Geckos for sale Availability

Once upon a time, Crested geckos were once considered super rare in captivity. Nowadays, baby crested geckos for sale are bred in large numbers and have become standard in the pet gecko for sale industry.

Crested Geckos for sale – Crested Gecko Substrate

Crested geckos spend most of their time above ground so a variety of substrates can be used. For simple substrate, a reptile carpet is attractive and easily cleaned. For a more naturalistic look, a peat-moss-based soil mix that doesn’t contain perlite will work well. Coir (coconut fiber pulp now sold in reptile stores as compressed bricks) mixed 50 percent with soil is a good choice for growing live plants. Paper towels are often used by breeders as they are not aesthetically pleasing but are very clean and easy to care for.

Crested Gecko Food

We recommend Pangea and Repashe’ powdered crested gecko diet marketed as Repashy Superfoods “Crested Gecko” Diet and
Pangea Crested gecko diet with our without insects, and has played a key role in making these among the most popular pet geckos for sale, because it excludes the need to feed them live insects. Crested geckos thrive when fed these diets exclusively and also can be supplemented weekly with additonal protein in the form of crickets dusted with calcium and vionate vitamin and mineral mixtures, which has been tested with thousands of geckos for more than 10 years.

Most often, powdered diets are mixed with two parts water and offered in shallow dishes three times a week as much as these geckos will eat at a feeding. The diet is allowed to remain 24 to 36 hours before removal as after 36 hours it can spoil.

Crested Gecko Housing and Crested Gecko Habitat Setup

Before purchasing your new baby crested gecko for sale online, or buying a pair of crested geckos for sale, you need to properly setup your crested gecko terrarium or crested gecko habitat.  Baby crested geckos are best housed in large plastic terrariums or in standard (20-inch) 10-gallon reptile tanks with a screen top. An adult crested gecko should be housed in a 20-gallon tank with a screen top.

Larger tanks will allow for better displays. In areas with moderate to high relative humidity, crested geckos will fare well in screen cages. These tanks have the advantage of being light and easy to clean. You can keep one male and several female crested geckos together. Male crested geckos may fight, particularly when in the company of females, and should not be kept together.

Crested Gecko Water and Humidity

Having proper water in your new crested geckos habitat so that it is easily accessible is key.  Water should always be available for crested geckos in a shallow water dish. These geckos also require a relative humidity of at least 50 percent and preferably 70 percent. In dry areas, the tanks should be lightly misted nightly or a cool air humidifier placed in the room. Inexpensive hygrometers (relative humidity gauges) for use with reptiles are now readily available in the pet trade.

When considering purchasing habitat decor for your new crested geckos for sale include a water dish that is both feasible and cleanable as it is “cool looking”.

Crested Gecko Lighting and Temperature

Crested geckos are ectotherms (body temperature varies with environmental temperature), so it is important that you provide the proper temperature range for activity and feeding. A thermometer is essential for accurate temperature measurements.  Consider getting your habitat temperatures on pointed before bring your new baby crested geckos for sale online home.

Crested geckos like temperatures of 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. It can drop to the low 70s at night. In most areas, this temperature range will be reached during the warm months of the year without additional heat. In summer, place crested geckos in a cool room if the temperature exceeds 87 degrees. During the winter crested geckos will tolerate night drops into the 60s.

Crested Gecko Handling and Temperament

New baby crested geckos that just arrived should not be handled, but first allowed to settle in for three to four weeks to let them adjust to their new habitat and to make sure they are eating as they should. When you start handling your crested gecko, make handling sessions short, no more than five minutes at a time and than allow the gecko back into it’s habitat or crested gecko terrarium. Baby crested geckos for sale tend to be flighty and can be injured in the course of handling. For this reason, you should wait until they are at least 3 inches SVL before handling.

Crested geckos seldom bite and when they do it is of little consequence. A quick nip and let go.

Crested Gecko Tails

In nature, crested geckos will usually lose their tails and end up with a tiny pointed tail nub.  It is completely natural and normal. “Taillessness” is a normal condition for adults crested geckos. In captivity, hobbyists like their crested geckos with tails, but this requires keeping animals individually and pampered to prevent tail loss.

Crested geckos, also known as eyelash geckos, were thought to be extinct until 1994 when several relatively large, thriving populations were found on the islands of New Caledonia.
