Viper geckos are one of the smallest geckos breeds in the world, measuring in at an adult size of only 2-3 inches. These desert animals are primarily insectivores, eating predominately crickets and mealworms. When housed in captivity, the average life span can be up to 10 years. A 10-15 gallon tank would make the perfect home for 1 male and 2 females. These gecko’s are terrestrial, meaning they live mainly on the ground.

This makes the amount of floor space more important than height, but remember to also put a screen top on your enclosure as they can climb glass when they are babies. Provide a variety of places for your viper to hide, such as half logs and caves. Remember to put a hide with moist moss inside to help with shedding and egg laying if you intend to breed.
Viper Gecko Substrate
Any substrate that you choose to use needs to be dust-free, as the particles can cause breathing problems. If using sand, ensure that it is very fine grain to reduce the risks of impaction. The safest substrate to use is newspaper or paper towels, this will take a lot of the guess work out of the equation and allow for easy clean ups.
Viper Gecko care – temperature
Viper geckos need a range of temperature in their enclosrue to ensure that they can regulate their body temperature. The best way to do this is to have your heat source on one side of the cage. The cool side should be 75F, with the warm side raising to 84F. The basking spot should be 90F-95F. At night the temperature should not drop below 68F-72F. As they are desert geckos, the humidity should range from 40% – 50% throughout the tank.
